Today was the Fourth of July and I found the atmosphere in New York to be more subdued than it had been a year ago. Fewer crowds, fewer people dressed in red-and-blue outfits and just fewer people celebrating in the streets.

I can’t help but wonder whether the current political climate has anything to do with it. When we live daily travel bans and looming health-care cuts, it’s kind of hard to chug your beer and scream “USA!” Or maybe these are the things that have always been happening that, either through privilege or the current administration’s lack of subtlety, so many of us have only come to face now.
